What is open play in pickleball?
Open play in pickleball is drop-in court time where anyone can show up without a partner, a reservation, or a rating. You add your paddle to the stack at the court, wait your turn, and rotate through games with whoever else is there. It's how most recreational players find their regular crew. No ratings, no brackets — just the kitchen and the folk.
How the paddle stack works
The paddle stack is how open play courts manage who plays next. Players line their paddles up — usually at the net post — in the order they arrived. When a court opens up, the next four paddles in line take the court. Winner stays, or the court rotates depending on the local custom. First paddle in, first to play. It's the fairest system in rec sports.
